Severe tempering of bainite generated at low transformation temperatures

چکیده
The response of a strong bainitic–steel to tempering at high temperatures is investigated, because a softened state is sometimes necessary during the manufacture of engineering components, prior to the final heat–treatment which hardens the material. Thermodynamic calculations conducted to determine the maximum temperature at which the steel could be annealed without forming austenite were found to significantly overestimate the actual temperature at which austenite, ferrite and cementite (γ+α+θ) can coexist in equilibrium. As a consequence, the tempering temperature must be limited to below about 700 C, which unfortunately necessitates many days of tempering in order to reduce the hardness to <250 HV. An alloy modification which may shorten this tempering time is suggested. One unexpected outcome is that the unintended heat treatment in the three– phase field revealed useful information about the nucleation of pearlite on cementite particles. Colonies of pearlite started inevitably on particles of cementite located at the γ/α interfaces, rather than at similar particles enclosed completely by the austenite.

Influence of Tempering on the Microstructure & Properties of Martensite and Bainite developed in a Low-C High-Si Steel
Martensitic and bainitic steels are two types of widely used steels with excellent mechanical behaviors in automatic industry. It’s universally acknowledged that asquenched martensite possesses poor ductility and impact toughness, which should be tempered before putting into application. During tempering, as-quenched martensite changes from a hard and brittle microstructure to more ductile and ...
متن کاملTemperature cycling and the rate of the bainite transformation
There is a novel range of steels under development, based on bainite forming at exceptionally low temperatures. The advantage of suppressing the transformation temperature is that incredibly fine platelets of bainitic ferrite are generated which are only 20–40 nm in thickness. This makes the steel strong and in combination with the austenite that is retained, gives a useful range of properties ...

The microstructure and properties of a 5 wt.% Cr cold work tool steel were studied after austenitisation at 1020°C, 1050°C or 1075°C followed by single, double and triple tempering treatments at 525°C. The microstructures were investigated with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction and phase transformations were studied by dilatometry. Furthermore, hardness and Charpy un-notched an...
متن کاملDesigning low carbon, low temperature bainite
The possibility of producing bainite at low temperatures by suppressing transformation using substitutional solutes has been investigated, as an alternative to using large carbon concentrations to achieve the same purpose. It is found that although transformation temperatures can indeed be suppressed in this way, the difference between the bainite and martensite start temperatures diminishes. T...

Local hardness increasing on the surface of the power plant rotor may result in severe damages. One major solution for rapid repairing of the rotors is the adaptive tempering heat treatment.
